1) Visit the download page to get the latest ChunkVNC release.

2) Run the installer and follow the prompts.

After you have installed ChunkVNC you will see this in your start menu:

1) Open the Repeater folder from the start menu, run "repeater108.exe" from the Windows folder and unblock any firewall messages. Clicking on the Repeater tray icon should bring up this window:

NOTE: If you are behind a router you will have to setup port forwarding or else InstantSupport won't be able to see the repeater. This is different on every model router but a nice guide is located at PortForward.com otherwise consult your router manual.

The following ports will need to be forwarded to the IP address of the computer running the repeater:

  • 5901
  • 443

You can double check that your port forward is working by typing 5901 or 443 into the port field at YouGetSignal.com

NOTE: If you don't need to use the viewer outside of the LAN that the repeater is running on, you can choose not to forward port 5901 for extra security.

NOTE: Although the Windows repeater is recommended, a Perl repeater script is available in the Repeater/Linux folder for those who wish to run a repeater from a Linux box. This is considered advanced and requires knowledge of Linux command line.

NOTE: The repeater must be running at all times on ONE computer for ChunkVNC to function, it is recommended to have a dedicated "always on" machine for this task.

1) Start the Compiler

2) Enter the WAN (internet) address of your repeater into the WAN field.

If you don't have a static WAN IP address then it is recommended that you sign up for No-IP.com
If you don't know what your local WAN IP address is find out with WhatIsMyIP.com.

3) Enter the LAN (local) address of your repeater into the LAN field.

4) Enter a password 9 to 128 characters in length.

5) Click "Compile!" and wait for the compile process to complete.

6) Once complete a temporary folder will open and you will see a file named InstantSupport.exe and a directory named Viewer.

7) Copy the Viewer folder onto the computers that will be use for providing support.

8) Copy InstantSupport.exe to a location that can be accessed by people in need of support. I suggest uploading this file to a web server so it can be easily downloaded.

NOTE: Only change the Viewer and Server ports only if you have changed the default ports on the repeater.

NOTE: The repeater must run a Server port of 443 for HTTP Proxy support.

1) Run InstantSupport on a computer in need of support, they will be greeted with an ID number.

2) Check repeater window, it will have a log entry that says "Server added to list ######".
NOTE: If this doesn't happen the problem is either with port forwarding or your WAN address.

3) Start Viewer\ChunkViewer.exe, type in the InstantSupport ID number and click Connect.

If the Viewer will be used on the same LAN as the repeater you'll have to switch to LAN mode unless your repeater supports loopback. You can do this by right clicking the dropdown box and selecting "Switch Mode".

If you need to reboot the computer or control User Account Control (UAC) on Vista/7 you must install InstantSupport as a service.

If you're good at following directions you should now be connected to the computer InstantSupport is running on! Congrats! If you feel a fantastic sense of acomplishment and just can't wait to thank me feel free to buy me a case of brew with the donate button at the top of the page!
